2021 Jeep Wrangler: The original off-road vehicle, the iconic Wrangler is a compact SUV that’s offered in 2- or 4-door body styles. Wrangler was most recently redesigned for 2018 and then last year Jeep added a pickup version called Gladiator. For 2021 Wrangler gets a plug-in electric version called 4xe and adds a high-performance model called Rubicon 392. Competitors include the Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender and Toyota 4Runner.
All Wrangler models come standard with 4-wheel drive. Three different systems are offered: Command-Trac, Selec-Trac and Rock-Track. All offer a low-range for extreme off-roading. Two-door models seat four and ride a 96.8-inch wheelbase. Four-doors seat five and ride a 118.4-inch wheelbase. Trim levels include Sport, Sport S, Rubicon and in 4-door only, Sahara.
Carryover engine choices include a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 270 horsepower, a 3.6-liter V6 that makes 285 horsepower and a turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 that makes 260 horsepower. New for 2021 is a 470-horsepower 6.4-liter V8 in the Rubicon 392 and a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines the turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with electric motors for a combined output of 375 horsepower. All engines come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Available on the V6 is a 6-speed manual. When its battery is fully charged, Wrangler 4xe can drive in all-electric mode for up to 22 miles.
Available driver-assist technology includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, rearview camera with cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring. Pricing ranges from $34,000 to $77,000.
