2022 Toyota GR 86: Toyota’s “affordable” sports car gets a new name and more power for 2022. Now known as the GR 86, this petite 4-seat, 2-door coupe adds GT to its moniker as an homage to Toyota legendary GAZOO Racing team. The GR 86 is mechanically similar to the Subaru BR-Z. in addition to the name change, 86 gets and styling and interior refresh as well. Competitors include the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Hyundai Veloster and Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Trim levels include base and Premium. Both are only rear-wheel-drive. For 2021, the engine moves from a 205-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder to a 228-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. Both the 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic return. Toyota claims that GT 86’s 0 to 60 MPH time has dropped from 7 seconds to 6.1 seconds.

The cabin gets upgraded front seats. GR 86 Premium grade seats add Alcantara with leather accents and leather-trimmed driver touchpoints with silver-colored accents. Additional interior upgrades include a three-mode digital display, 8-inch Multimedia touch-screen and available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility with NFC pairing, Pricing will be announced in the coming months and the GR 86 will go on sale later this year.
