2022 Volkswagen Taos: Based on Volkswagen’s MBQ architecture, Taos is designed to slot into Vw’s lineup beneath the Tiguan. A compact crossover with two rows of seats, Taos seats 5 and is offered only as a 4-door wagon. Since Taos is on the smaller end of the compact SUV category, competitors include Buick Encore GX, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Compass, Kia Soul, Mazda CX-30 and Subaru Crosstrek.

The model lineup include S, SE and SEL. Front-wheel-drive is standard, with all-wheel drive an across-the-board option. Sole powertrain is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower and mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Towing is not recommended.

Taos boasts a tech-forward package, including the latest standard and available driver assistance technologies offered by Volkswagen. The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit is standard, along with the next-generation Volkswagen Car-Net telematics system, offering five years of Remote Access services at no additional charge and in-car Wi-Fi capability when you subscribe to a data plan. Available technology includes Volkswagen’s MIB3 infotainment system -- with wireless charging and wireless App-Connect for compatible devices, and SiriusXM with 360L -- as well as the IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite, Light Assist, and Dynamic Road Sign Display.

MSRP for the Taos S starts at $22,995 for front-wheel drive and $25,040 with 4Motion all-wheel drive.
