1996 Lexus LX 450 Review

1996 Lexus LX 450 - People mover.

By:

The new Lexus LX 450 sport/utility vehicle offers stately, rugged transportation.

LX 450: It's hard not to like the big, tough $47,500 LX 450 sport/utility vehicle because it is a posh, equipment-loaded version of Toyota's spacious, go-anywhere $40,258 Land Cruiser four-door "sport/ute."

Many are flocking from luxury cars to luxurious sport/utes, but Toyota found itself without one for 1996. So it had its Lexus luxury car division give the Land Cruiser a name change and items such as a different grille, new headlights, special alloy wheels, leather-and-simulated wood interior and killer sound system.

Owners of the LX 450 get the Lexus white-glove dealership treatment. They also get the Trooper's smooth 4.5-liter, 212-horsepower overhead-cam, 24-valve six-cylinder, nifty-shifting four-speed automatic transmission - and a full-time four-wheel-drive system that would make them comfortable on African safaris.

The dual-airbag LX 450 has anti-lock brakes and the Land Cruier's rugged suspension, although the springs have been made softer to pamper the upscale vehicle crowd. The LX 450 Lexus isn't as carlike as, say, a Ford Explorer sport/ute, but steers, rides and handles quite well.

This is a quiet, fast vehicle, although it weighs a staggring 4,971 pounds and delivers only an estimated 13 m.p.g. in the city and 15 on highways.

The 189.8-inch-long LX 450 is about as long as an Explorer. But it can be a hassle for some to enter or leave it because it is quite high at 73.6 inches.

Still, the LX 450 is easy to maneuver and can even be had in its own haute colors. And it would be almost impossible to wear it out.

Jedlicka's auto articles have been printed in national magazines, including Esquire and Harper's. His auto columns have been reprinted in U.S. government publications and economic textbooks and he is profiled in the "World's Greatest Auto Show" history book about the Chicago Auto Show. In late 1975, Jedlicka was host and technical advisor for three one-hour television specials, "Auto Test 76," which aired nationally on PBS and were the first nationally televised auto road test shows.

In 1995, Jedlicka was the recipient of the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois Inc.'s Consumer Education Award, given annually to a person who has gained distinction in the field of consumer education. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in the Media category and inducted into the Legends of Motorsports Guild at the Carquest World of wheels custom car show in Chicago in January, 2006.
