2026 Hyundai Sonata
Sonata hybrid strikes up the band.
Those seeking traditional comforts of a mid-size sedan with impressionable trunk credentials must choose from a shrinking list of available opportunities. One tempting opportunity includes the long-standing Sonata from South Korean auto giant Hyundai.
Time was, a generation or two ago, just about every driveway sported a four-door sedan, the premier ride of choice for bustling suburban families. But changing times and economic forces conspired to de-thrown the one-time king of cozy. Now, sedans play second (or third) fiddle to trendy crossover and their larger sport utility brethren. General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis all excommunicated the four-door sedan from their portfolios; so those folks seeking a balanced ride and lower entry points sedans provide must peek across the pond to European or Asian automakers.
Sonata brings forth a long, impressive track record with the first generation birthed in 1985 as Hyundai's rear-wheel drive flagship sedan in select markets. The sedan's second-generation front-wheel drive effort (1989-1994) was the first to reach the United States. More than 40 years later, Sonata represents the company's longest running nameplate worldwide and here in the States. Hyundai also markets the Elantra, its smaller, compact-sized sedan.
The progressively styled 2026 model represents a seventh-generation effort available here in the U.S. which debuted in the 2020 model year and still retains an elegant, head-turning style. A mid-cycle refresh arrived in the 2024 model year.
The competitively-priced Sonata four door combines value and a choice of three unique powertrains including a fuel-extending gas-electric hybrid, self-charging technology never in need of an at-home 120-volt wall socket or on-the-road fast chargers and our tester this week.
This gas-electric hybrid technology, forming the basics of hybrid electric vehicles or HEVs, generates 44 miles per gallon in city travel and a very frugal 51 mpg highway within returning trims. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine combines with single 39-kilowatt traction motor motivating the front axle and producing 192 total horsepower. The motor powers via a 270-volt lithium-ion polymer direct current battery pack. This HEV technology is nothing new to Sonata as the first gas-electric hybrid appeared in 2011 with upgrades and improvements arriving along the way.
The hybrid components mate with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission rather than a less-than-thrilling continuously variable transmission (CVT) often found within rival hybrid electric vehicles.
The other two gas-fed Sonta powertrains include a high-volume, 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine cranking out 191 horses while the other, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four delivering 290 horses sold exclusively within the snazzy, Sonata N-Line trim level.
The N-Line represents one of six available 2026 Sonata trims; three offer traditional internal combustion engines and three arrive with hybrid technology. An SE and SEL Sport (both powered by the naturally-aspirated four) join N-Line representing traditional internal combustion engine selections. An all-new, high-mileage Blue Hybrid, SEL Hybrid and Limited Hybrid round out the 2026 lineup, which slightly diverts from the 2025 set up. Last year, Sonata marketed just two HEV offerings and a now retired SEL ICE trim.
The new-for-2026, competitively-priced Blue Hybrid squeezes fuel economy even further, generating 47 mpg city and 56 mpg highway compared to the already impressive SEL and Limited Hybrids generating 44 and 51 mpgs respectively. The 2026 Blue Hybrid checks in at $29,050, about $2,000 less than a 2025 model year entry SEL hybrid.
By comparison, the front-wheel drive Sonata with 2.5-liter four delivers a still impressive 28 mpg city and 38 mpg fuel economy results. Subtract five mpgs for each category when opting for all-wheel drive. Hybrid trims include a smaller gas tank measuring in at 13.2 gallons compared with 15.9 gallons with both ICE-exclusive engines.
Most 2026 trims offer front-wheel drive exclusively with the exception of the gas-fed SEL Sport, the sole trim arriving in all-wheel drive.
The eye-friendly exterior promotes stylish creases with narrow A and C pillars, a large rear window and short trunk lid with a whale tail end flip. The long hood includes dual creases traveling down the center region from the windshield bottom towards the front end and framing the circular H logo just above the grille. A white daytime running light bar illuminates the front from end to end and doubles as amber-colored turn-signal indicators at the tippy ends. Front fenders include secondary amber blinkers activated with each tap of the turn signal stalk. A trio of long-lasting, thickish LED headlights stare forward with minimal wrap-around effect to fenders, intersecting with thick, satin-chrome bars resting at a 45-degree angle and framing the black-diamond-filled lower air dam.
Easy-grab strap-like exterior handles share body color. The 5.3 inches of ground clearance measures considerably lower than traditional five-door crossovers (usually in the 8.2-inch height) providing a body placement experience in line with lower-oriented two-door coupes.
Our nicely packaged 2026 Serenity White Limited trim hybrid entered with a $36,100 starting price. The only factory extra, a $500 hit for the premium white exterior paint, combined with $240 worth of dealer-installed factory floor mats for a bottom line reaching $40,085 including a $1,245 destination charge. The lowest-priced Sonata, an SE with traditional internal combustion engine starts at $27,300, $400 higher than the 2025 equivalent. All six Sonata 2026 trims arrive well equipped with few factory options.
Our Limited HEV's interior included Leather-like seating surfaces while the two lower hybrid selections offer cloth style comfort. All include heated front buckets with Limited adding a ventilation function. Limited adds a heated steering wheel standard. Our Limited HEV trim includes a new panoramic sunroof as standard equipment as does the SEL HEV trim.
Limited trims offer Hyundai's useful blind spot view monitor feeding a welcome live broadcast stream of side spot activities temporarily into the animated instrument panel. Summon the left turn signal and driver's side live-action activity feeds into the IP's left-side orb. Signal right and passenger side activity gets highlighted. Once the turn or lane change completes, the orbs return to their respective speedometer/IP functions.
Centering the dash, a long, slightly beveled rectangular screen combining both a left-side 12.3-inch instrument cluster and center-skewed 12.3-inch multi-function screen with pinch and swipe capabilities. This similar design occupies most Genesis luxury vehicles. Genesis resides as Hyundai's upscale luxury brand. The center screen works in tandem with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto helping integrate Smartphone downloads into screen activity.
The screen's 'Set Up' page provides 12 icon squares for upcall of vehicle functions including 'Vehicle', 'Sound', 'Voice Recognition' and 'General'. The instrument panel includes three themes available when selecting 'Cluster' from the main Set Up menu then select 'cluster theme' and then choosing from 'classic,' 'modern' and 'simple.' These three provide unique designs framing the two outer orbs. The inside digital menu options monitor via a steering wheel scroll at the 9 o'clock potion. Overall, the layout design provides a logical path for even a sixty-something to follow.
Smartly, Sonata keeps HVAC controls separate from the multi-function screen in a dedicated lower region within the central dash. Included are dual, colorful twist dials controlling dual-zone front temperature zones with a digital display in-circle. In between resides a flat, touch-sensitive surface for ordering up fan speed and direction along with front and rear defroster activities.
Temperature controls separate from the upper screen via long, thin air vents and a row of four quick-select push buttons interacting with the screen and the tri-angular red hazard button. This region also houses two old-school yet welcome twist knobs controlling volume and station select opportunities. Below is an inlet cove housing the flat, wireless charger and two Type C USB ports. Row two incudes access to a pair of Type-C USB ports.
Between front buckets resides a dual inline beverage holder and arm rest/storage bin hinged at the back. Also, drivers may choose from three driving modes (Eco, Sport, My Drive) from an area toggle-like switch that tweaks throttle response, shift points and steering sensitivity. Modes may also select via the touch screen when calling and commanding the 'Vehicle' option.
The electronic six-speed automatic transmission shifts from reverse to neutral to drive from a twist of a right-side steering column stalk. Park summons with an inward push of the endcap. Adjacent, a second stalk monitoring the front windshield wipers. The column's left side boasts yet another stalk monitoring front headlights resulting in a spyder-like manually tilt-and-telescoping stalk with multiple protruding legs.
Also crowded into this region, Plus and Minus tabs on the steering wheel for optimizing or minimizing effects of regenerative braking, a staple of HEVs, Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) extending mileage ranges even further. This process recoups and stores kinetic energy created during the mechanical braking process into the direct current lithium-ion battery for later electrical use when either the EV or My Drive modes select. The Sonata hybrid provides four levels of Regen Braking, including a coast option that in effect bypasses the system and its benefits. Level 3 provides the sharpest regen braking effect, significantly slowing down the Sonata once the foot lifts off the accelerator pedal. Level 2 provides a mid-range effect requiring earlier foot braking activity with Level 1 delivering mild friction interplay. Regenerative braking remains simple to master with notable fuel economy improvement.
The remote button unlocking the power trunk lid locates on the dash left of the steering column. The electronic push-button start resides right of the steering column stalk.
The spacious trunk includes interior, goose-neck-style hinges covered and padded with soft-touch materials for their own protection (and the protection of precious cargo). The 16-cubic-foot dimensions measures in as one of the largest found in the mid-size class and grows in stature when 60/40-split second row backrests fold flat onto seat cushions. When upright, Sonata provides three-adult comfort.
As with every Hyundai-badged product sold in the states, Sonata includes one of the industry's most generous powertrain warranties as far as timelines are concerned. The 10-year/100,000-mile warranty provides purchasers with extended peace of mind at no additional charge; a notable value-added consideration when comparing rival sedans or crossovers of any size or shape.
Hyundai's U.S. sales reached new heights in the 2025 calendar year surpassing the 900,000 mark at 901,686, a healthy eight percent jump from the previous 12-month cycle. Sonata's combined sales (both hybrid and pure ICE) reached 60,094, a 13 percent dip from the previous year.
