2026 Ram 1500

Ram remains the undisputed king of the concrete jungle and open road, proving that a workhorse can indeed wear a tuxedo.

by: Mark Bilek

The 2026 Ram 1500 returns following a significant mid-cycle refresh that reintroduced the 5.7L HEMI V8 to the lineup alongside the recently debuted Hurricane straight-six engines. Competing in the highly contested full-size pickup segment against the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, and Toyota Tundra, the Ram continues to offer both Quad Cab and Crew Cab body styles with seating for up to six passengers. This year’s updates focus heavily on powertrain diversity and cabin technology, aiming to maintain the vehicle's market position through a combination of traditional mechanical options and modern turbocharged performance.

The 2026 lineup is available in a whopping eleven trim levels: Tradesman, Express, Big Horn, Warlock, Sport, Laramie, Rebel, RHO, Limited, Limited Longhorn, and the flagship Tungsten. Powertrain options begin with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque light hybrid assist, producing 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, followed by the returning 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque rated at 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. For higher performance, the 3.0L Hurricane Twin-Turbo I6 is available in two states of tune: a standard output delivering 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque, and a High-Output (HO) variant generating 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, with drivetrain options including rear-wheel drive or multiple auto, full- and part-time four-wheel-drive systems. Maximum towing capacity for the 2026 model is rated at 11,610 pounds, with a peak payload capacity of 2,360 pounds.

Pricing for the 2026 Ram 1500 starts at approximately $41,025 for the Tradesman and exceeds $89,000 for the Tungsten trim. Standard features include the Uconnect 5 system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, while higher trims offer a 14.5-inch center display and a segment-first 10.25-inch front passenger interactive screen. Safety technology is expansive, featuring standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitoring, while the new "Hands-Free Active Driving Assist" is available on premium models. Standout options for 2026 include a 23-speaker Klipsch Reference Premiere audio system and the return of the Express and Black Express appearance packages, which provide specialized styling cues for entry-level buyers.

Engine Performance
The engine performance of the 2026 Ram 1500 is characterized by its remarkable breadth of character. The base 3.6L Pentastar V6 serves as a competent entry point, delivering smooth, if a bit modest, power with a 0-60 mph time of approximately 8.5 seconds; while it lacks the punch for heavy towing, the eTorque system provides seamless stop-start transitions. The return of the 5.7L HEMI V8 brings back a more potent throttle response and a mechanical soundtrack that many traditionalists missed in the 2025 model. This V8-equipped truck can reach 60 mph in roughly 6.0 seconds, offering the robust low-end grunt necessary for confident highway merging and consistent towing performance.

The Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six engines represent the peak of the Ram's powertrain options. The standard 420-hp version offers a significant step up in urgency, clocking a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds with a broad torque curve that makes the truck feel much lighter than its actual curb weight. The High-Output Hurricane is nothing short of a powerhouse, propelling the Limited or Tungsten trims to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds. This engine provides effortless passing power at any speed, and the eight-speed transmission is tuned to perfection here, snapping off quick, crisp shifts that keep the turbos in the meat of their powerband.

Fuel Economy
Fuel economy figures vary significantly based on the chosen powerplant and drive configuration. The 3.6L V6 remains the efficiency leader with EPA estimates of 20 city and 25 highway mpg for rear-wheel-drive models, falling to 19 city and 24 highway mpg with four-wheel drive. The 5.7L HEMI V8, utilizing mid-hybrid assistance and cylinder deactivation, averages around 17 city and 22 highway mpg. The 3.0L Hurricane (standard output) matches the V8's efficiency with a combined 19 mpg rating, while the High-Output Hurricane is the most demanding, rated at 15 city and 21 highway mpg. All engines run on regular unleaded fuel, except for the High-Output Hurricane which requires premium. With the optional 33-gallon fuel tank, the V6 offers a theoretical highway range of over 800 miles. Real-world testing suggests these figures are achievable during steady cruising, though the Hurricane engines are particularly sensitive to heavy-footed driving, which can see averages drop into the low teens quickly.

Off-Road and Four-Wheel Drive
The all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems are designed for both utility and specialized recreation. Lower trims utilize a part-time electronic transfer case, while Laramie and above feature an "Auto" mode that can shift power to the front wheels as needed on varying surfaces. For off-road enthusiasts, the Rebel and RHO trims provide a 1-inch raised ride height, underbody skid plates, and a rear electronic locking differential. These models also include Selec-Speed Control, which acts as a low-speed cruise control for technical climbs, allowing the driver to focus solely on steering while the truck manages the throttle and braking.

Driving Dynamics
Ride quality is where the Ram 1500 distances itself from the traditional truck market. The standard five-link coil-spring rear suspension, a class exclusive, provides a level of compliance and isolation that is unheard of in other leaf-sprung pickups. It effectively eliminates the "jitter" often felt in unladen trucks when traveling over washboard surfaces or expansion joints. The available Active-Level Four-Corner Air Suspension takes this further, providing a plush, almost cloud-like ride that absorbs large craters with ease. Even on the 22-inch wheels of the Tungsten trim, the ride remains composed and sophisticated, feeling more like a high-end European SUV than a utilitarian tool.

In terms of handling, the Ram 1500 offers steering that is light but remarkably accurate. It lacks the vague, "dead" feeling at the center that used to define the segment, allowing for precise placement on narrow roads. Body lean is well-managed; the truck settles into corners predictably without excessive swaying. The braking system is equally well-tuned, featuring a firm pedal with short travel that provides strong, linear stopping power. Even under heavy load, the brakes resist fading and provide the necessary feedback to the driver to maintain total control.

Interior noise levels are arguably the best in the class. Ram has used extensive sound-deadening material and acoustic glass to create a cabin that remains eerily quiet at highway speeds. Wind noise and road roar are virtually non-existent, making the Ram a significantly quieter environment than the Toyota Tundra or the Ford F-150. This silence enhances the premium feel of the cabin, allowing for easy conversation without the need to raise one's voice over mechanical thrum.

Interior Design & Decor
The interior of the 2026 Ram is a masterclass in design and material selection. From the entry-level Tradesman’s durable plastics to the Tungsten’s quilted Natura Plus leather and real wood veneers, every surface feels deliberate and high-quality. The design is modern but stays true to the truck's heritage with chunky, high-quality switchgear. Features like the dual-pane panoramic sunroof and the customizable ambient lighting allow the cabin to transform from a mobile office into a luxury lounge in seconds.

Functionality is good, as Ram has mostly managed to integrate massive screens without sacrificing too many physical controls. Important functions like volume, tuning, and climate control still have dedicated knobs and buttons that are easy to use by feel. The center console is a triumph of utility, offering enough space to store a large laptop and featuring a sliding tray that allows the user to prioritize different storage areas. The ergonomics are sound, with every major control within easy reach of the driver.

Technology & Safety
The technology and safety suite is comprehensive. The available 14.5-inch touchscreen is the centerpiece, running a lightning-fast version of Uconnect 5 that supports wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air updates. Safety tech like the 360-degree Surround View Camera and the Digital Rearview Mirror are game-changers for visibility in such a large vehicle. The Hands-Free Active Driving Assist is particularly impressive, providing smooth lane-centering and speed management that reduces driver fatigue on long interstate hauls.

Seating & Comfort
The seating area is exceptionally spacious, especially in the Crew Cab which offers 45.2 inches of rear legroom, a figure that beats many luxury limousines. Front seats in higher trims offer 24-way power adjustment and a massage function that is genuinely effective for long trips. The rear bench is also heated and ventilated on premium models, and it can even recline for additional comfort. Getting in and out is assisted by wide door openings and power-deploying running boards that drop to a very accessible height.

Cargo & Payload
Bed size is good, with the exception of Ram not offering a true long-bed body style. The 5-foot-7-inch box provides a volume of 53.9 cubic feet, while the 6-foot-4-inch offers 61.5 cubic feet. Ram also offers the only secure outside storage with the available RamBox. Inside the cabin, the rear seat cushions flip up to reveal a flat load floor with integrated tie-downs, providing nearly 70 cubic feet of interior storage for sensitive gear. The cabin is equipped with a plethora of power options, including multiple USB-A and USB-C ports and 115-volt AC outlets capable of powering laptops or small tools.

2026 Ram 1500

Bottom Line
The 2026 Ram 1500 is a dual-purpose vehicle that excels as both a luxury cruiser and a capable workhorse. Its primary strengths are its unrivaled interior quality, its sophisticated ride, and the newfound engine diversity that the return of the HEMI V8 provides. While it may not hit the absolute peak towing numbers of its competitors, it offers a far more refined and enjoyable driving experience in almost every other metric. The sheer cost of the upper-tier models can be a deterrent, and the fuel economy of the High-Output Hurricane can be a shock at the pump if you aren't careful with the throttle.

Compared to its peers, the Ram feels like the most "complete" truck on the market. It offers more interior tech than the Silverado and a more comfortable ride than the F-150. For those looking for the best value, the Laramie trim remains the standout choice; it includes the premium leather, heated/ventilated seats, and the larger touchscreen while keeping the price in a more reasonable bracket. It provides the core "Ram Experience" without the extreme price tag of the Tungsten, making it the most logical choice for the majority of truck buyers.
