2026 Kia K4

Kia compact adds a hatchback body style in '26.

by: Dave Boe

What's in a name? Ask Kia Motors and the answer may return with a "consistency" reply.

Since its 2009 worldwide introduction at the Chicago Auto Show, the South Korean automaker successfully promoted the compact Forte throughout multiple markets. The entry-minded sedan attracted an audience of price-sensitive shoppers seeking dependability and an extra-value powertrain warranty. It replaced the underperforming compact Spectra within Kia's portfolio.

During the vehicle's fourth-generation introduction in the 2025 model year, Kia recast Forte as the K4. Now, the sedan's name corresponds with the same identifier utilized in most other worldwide markets outside North America. Kia recently renamed its mid-sized Optima Sedan as the K5 for identical reasons, so Kia remains all in with the K prefix promoting its sedans.

While a next-generation sedan body style arrived in 2025, Kia offers up a new, five-door hatchback sidekick in the 2026 model year available in three trims levels: EX, GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo. The hatchback measures 11 inches shorter from front to back than the sedan. All K4 sedans and liftbacks power exclusively with a pair of traditional, internal combustion engines and standard front-wheel drive.

Both EX and GT-Line hatchbacks power up via a 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated in-line four-cylinder engine cranking out a ho hum 147 horsepower and connecting up with an IVT transmission while the GT-Line Turbo offers up a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder Turbocharged variety upping horses to 190 and teaming with a traditional eight-speed automatic transmission design. The sedan version arrives standard with the 2.0-naturally aspirated engine in all five of its trims.

Consider an IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission) Kia's (and parent company Hyundai's) spin and improvement upon a fuel efficient CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Both use a wide ratio pully system rather that a set number of planetary gears (usually seven or eight) promising a smoother driving experience through a broader range of operations. From an overall performance standpoint, however, a traditional eight-speed automatic provides enhanced thrills.

Fuel economy checks in at 28 miles per gallon city and 34 mpg with the naturally aspirated four teamed with the IVT. Numbers slightly dip with the turbo four and eight-speed automatic transmission duo checking in at 26 and 33 respectively. Both engines suggest regular, 87-octane fuel to satiate the 12.4-gallon tank.

For those seeking all-EV motive, plug-in-hybrid vehicle (PHEV) or gas-electric hybrid vehicle within a compact structure, Kia's Niro crossover offers all three propulsions while K4 centers upon conventional gas-engine travel.

When the tester arrived for a week's worth of drivetime, the K4 liftback struck a pose, largely aided by a can't miss Sparkling Yellow premium exterior paint, hinting at a Fort Knox golden glow. It's one of three premium colors (joining Current Red and Snow-White Pearl) adding only a $395 ding. Other manufacturers generally add much more to the bottom line, with some luxury brands stamping an extra $5,000 for a color premium.

Kia for its part builds K4 sedans and hatchbacks with loads of standard factory features and few add-ons other than premium paint. Both GT trims make available a $295 interior red color package. The GT-Line with 2.0-liter four cylinder also offers a $2,100 premium package with upgraded sound system and ventilated front seats. Turbo's sole option package, a $2,300 technology perk adds a handy live-action blind-spot monitor feed into the instrument panel when the turn signal indicator activates, ambient interior lights, heated steering wheel, surround view in-screen monitors and memory driver's seat settings.

The eye-appealing, sculped K4 looks the part of a 'hot hatch' with a lower-slung aggressive stance with a short 5.3-inch ground clearance not usually associated with taller-standing five-door crossovers. The two powertrains provide quaint, but not overly aggressive hp numbers. Exterior front doors include strap-like door openers while rear side doors opt for a more stealth operation. Rather than the strap-design, K4 builds horizontal black pull handles into the upper black window framing. While stylish and attractive, at night when natural lighting dims, hunting and feeling around for the handles may lead to mini-frustration. Backlighting or any other illumination form would ease the search.

Similar black framing and accents adorn door bottoms and frame circular wheel wells while topping side doors and connecting C and rear D pillars with a thick, horizontal accent bar. Lower window framing in the turbo trim takes on a chrome-like finish morphing into a small triangle behind the second-row side windows. The sharp contrast with the golden Sparkling yellow paint helps K4 stand out in a crowded parking lot. The manually operating rear hatch includes a top-side spoiler. The front row, power moonroof also includes a black accent.

In front, a long, narrow grille with top-side horizontal satin chrome bar extends end to end with matte black bar at the bottom with its own vertical center line mingled into the middle. At each end narrow LED bulbs (a GT-Line Turbo exclusive) illuminate the road ahead. Connecting to the grille and framing the hood corner is a Y-like, spider-leg grouping of small LED amber accent lights blinking in unison when turn signals enact from the steering column's right-hand stalk. The larger lower air dam/grille also stretches end-to-end in matte black with three vertical bars.

Included with every all-new K4 hatchback, Kia's revised corporate logo where stick-like straight letters intersect with a continual flow on the lower hood, liftback door and steering wheel center, replacing the oval-ish, block-like lettered sans-serif version retired in late 2021. Kia incorporated a similar typeface with the K4 designation found on the hatch door.

The lowest-priced hatchback, an EX, starts at $24,990. A mid-level GT-Line arrives at $25,990. Our four-cylinder Turbo began at the starting line with a $28,790 figure. Factory options included the $395 Sparking Yellow exterior paint and $2,300 technology package with $190 carpeted floor mats as the sole dealer option bringing the bottom line to $32,870 with $1,195 destination charge. This represents the most opulent K4 hatchback available in 2026.

By comparison, a 2026 K4 sedan starts at $22,290 for an entry LX trim, representing one of the lowest-priced offerings from a major automaker in the United States. The K4 hatchback quietly takes the mantle from Kia's funk-a-delic, box-like subcompact Soul five door liftback as the brand's entry-level hatchback as Soul quietly retired production after the 2025 model year.

Both the GT-Line and GT-Line turbo substitute a multi-link rear suspension for the base model's torsion beam rear design. Brakes provide predictable foot travel without a spongy end point.

The GT-Line turbo includes a host of standard items not privy to lower trims including alloy sport pedals, 18-inch alloy wheels with black finish, LED fog lights and upgraded safety features tucked into the optional technology package.

The entry K4 GT-Line Turbo includes a standard center dash design found in pricier, mid-size Kia products, a wide, flat, thin, horizontal screen combining the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and 12.3-inch multi-function scenter screen gently extending up above the central dash. It's a long black screen before K4 calls up for duty via a circular electronic start-stop push button below the center screen between the front buckets. This large dual screen format remains optional in GT-Line while the EX trim opts for a smaller four-inch instrument panel layout.

The digital center of the IP flips through various information panels via a 9 o'clock steering wheel push button. The outer orbs offer a couple choices selectable from the 'settings' menu nested within the multi-function screen.

Temperature controls monitor from sizable, tactile, push-pull tabs under and a comfortable distance from the center screen and below a pair of narrow vertical air vents increasing/decreasing dual zone temperatures, fan speed and direction.

Heated and ventilated driver's seat functions along with heated steering wheel control reside on the driver's door just below the chrome-like semi-circular pull handle. The turbo model boasts comfortable dual tone Syn-Tex artificial leather upholstery. White piping adored seats and door panels while the steering wheel's center and top half also promoted the white theme, contrasting with black interior coloring and brushed aluminum accents. Both GT- Line trims include the black/white color combination along with a black/red color option. Entry EX arrives with an all-black interior with the same Syn Tex material

All three trims include a flat, wireless charging pad powering up a single Smartphone under the center screen. Also nearby, a pair of USB type-C ports. The center portion of the wide screen monitors sound volume and on/off functions from a brushed-aluminum tactile thumb-scroll below the screen flanked by three short-cut command buttons interacting with the screen. A secondary volume scroll locates on the steering wheel's 3 o'clock right wing along with an up/down search button. No twist-style dials reside below or on the screen.

Two drive modes, 'Normal' and 'Sport,' activate from a clearly marked rectangular push button within the bottom spoke within the three-spoke steering wheel with a flat-style top and bottom.

The transmission shifter between front buckets includes a traditional vertical guide/slot and tall-standing, knobbed top. Dual beverage holders swallow multiple-sized cups thanks to retractable interior side walls handling smaller-sized beverages.

Look under the flat cargo floor for the standard temporary spare tire in all three hatchback trims. Above, a very plentiful-for-a-compact 22.2 cubic feet of room resides behind prone second row spit bench seats. Manually fold the 60/40 split backrests down from a 'let-go' pull-type latch atop of the backrest, and that number swells to 59.3-inches.

Despite its low-slung roof, row two occupants enjoy ample headroom and decent leg space for a compact vehicle. The vertical, minimally intrusive, transmission floor hump provides the opportunity for three adults in back for short jaunts. All four outboard seating positions include ceiling handles and map/reading lights tuck inside the loops beaming down from the ceiling. Rear travelers also have access to a pair of Type-C USB ports between the back ends of front buckets along with a small, deep storage hub.

Kia Motors continues as part of the South-Korean-based Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai Motor Co, its Genesis luxury sub brand and Kia Motors). Upon Kia's messy bankruptcy in 1997, Hyundai took a controlling stake in 1998 and now controls a 33.7 percent stake.

Kia generates miles of positive press from its 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty coverage, the industries longest plan of this sorts. As an added perk, Kia includes basic maintenance coverage that once was privy to high-end automakers. Plus, Kia offers five years (or 60,000 miles, whichever arrives first) of emergency roadside assistance plan. Many rivals cover roadside assistance for three years or less, another reason to consider the all-new, versatile K4 hatchback.
