2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid

Generation Two Palisade adds Hybrid opportunity.

by: Dave Boe

Hyundai's flagship offering grows in stature and adds a fuel-extending gas-electric hybrid variant kicking off its well-executed second-generation debut in 2026.The popular, family-friendly three-row Palisade crossover first arrived in 2020 and instantly became a consumer must-see balancing price, functionality and sparkly good looks.

This review highlights the gas-electric hybrid version, not offered in generation one, but a key ingredient Gen Two Palisade brings to the table along with its best-in-class interior space and upscale interior nuances. Both arrive with a unibody build from the factory, a car-like structure that's a smoother experience than the body-on-frame structure some sport utility vehicles choose.

The second-generation Palisade's wheelbase (distance between front and rear axle) grows by 2.7 inches while overall length extends by the same 2.7-inch measurement while height extends up a half-inch. Other upgrades include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the board with a new, artistic LED headlight structure consisting of a half-dozen vertical light bars surrounding a returning large, bold front grille, all gently wrapping to the fenders. The 'H" logo sits above at the edge of the front hood. These same brick-like wrap-around LED bars also frame the lower liftback door.

Palisade's recent advancements have gained notoriety from many corners of the automotive sector, regionally and nationally. This past February at the 2026 Chicago Auto Show, the 2026 Palisade (Internal Combustion Version) earned the coveted 'Family Vehicle Award,' the absolute top honor bestowed annually by the Chicago-based Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA). Started in 1991 (with this scribe as a founding member and Past President), MAMA continuously pursues the highest standards in automotive coverage and evaluations.

The three-row Palisade ICE also walked away a month earlier with the '2026 North American Utility of the Year' handed out each January by a veteran group of 50 nationwide, independent evaluators not exclusively associated with a single publication or site. This too carries a greater deal of weight within the community among the throng of 'kar kudos' annually handed/given out.

The new Palisade 2026 hybrid edition rates even better than the gas-exclusive version in this scribe's opinion as it raises the bar even higher with improved fuel economy, potent low-end torque and additional horsepower all with minimal added cost The hybrid version arrived at Hyundai dealers later in the model year than its internal combustion brethren.

This self-charging hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) never needs a nightly wall-socket plug thanks to the technological marvel of regenerating braking and low-tech coasting recapturing kinetic energy as electricity. For those living without consistent garage time or little access to a wall socket when parked overnight, self-charging HEVs make sense when seeking improved fuel economy outside of the Electrical Vehicle (EV) or Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PHEV) subsets. Palisade joins several other Hyundai models sporting HEV powertrains including Elantra and Sonata sedans along with compact Santa Fe and Tuscan crossovers.

This HEV technology is nothing new as the first gas-electric badged Hyundai first appeared in 2011 with plenty of upgrades added along the way resulting in this latest-generation dual motor hybrid system. All Hyundai HEVs, along with all internal combustion offerings, qualify for the class-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. It's the longest powertrain warranty in the industry providing peace of mind to potential shoppers and continues as a key differentiator for Hyundai Motor America.

Its sizeable fuel tank (18.2 gallons) combined with a 35 mile per gallon fuel economy estimate (FWD) promises a 600-mile travel range between fuel ups. Palisade accepts regular, 87-octane fuel helping ease price fluctuations as more expensive premium fuel is not required.

A high-voltage, 1.65-kilowatt hour (300-volt) lithium-ion direct current battery powers up two electric motors with one (17 horsepower) directly connected to a 2.5-liter turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engine reducing power delivery loss and eliminating belt-driven dynamics. The second electric motor (72 horsepower) assists propulsion and regenerative braking while assisting with the transmission. Expect a wistful 329 combined horsepower rating along with 339 lb.-ft. of low-end torque. This compares favorably Hyundai's mid-size 2026 Sonata sedan HEV pumping out 192 horses. By comparison, the non-hybrid Palisade includes a 3.6-liter V-6 internal combustion engine delivering 287 horses (15 percent less than the hybrid).

Depending upon a front-wheel or all-wheel design, hybrid fuel economy readouts break out differently. Our all-wheel drive tester registered 29 miles per gallon city and 30 mph highway. Add two miles in each category for front-wheel drive. An all-wheel drive V-6 ICE Palisade, by contrast, registers 18 mpg city and 24 highway.

Similar-sized crossover vehicles driven by pure electric power (EVs) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric power (PHEVs) employ larger DC packs requiring additional under-floor space. Palisade locates its DC lithium-ion battery pack under the front passenger seat minimizing cargo volume losses in rows two and three, while allowing people packaged in back to enjoy maximum stretch.

Also, the selection of a newly updated, next-generation, hybrid-specific six-speed automatic transmission rather than the humbler CVT-designed transmission found in many HEVs, provides Palisade with a sportier (less frumpy) performance with the second electric motor integrated into the six-speed automatic transmission. This new design removes the traditional starter motor by transferring its duties to the motor and minimizes the vertical floor hump within the confines of the two back rows.

When activating the six-speed automatic transmission from the driver's seat, a right-side steering column stalk tackles the job with an end twist up summoning drive and a twist down choosing reverse. A push of the end cap signals park. Also of note, this same stalk incorporates the electronic start/stop square on its front face when turning on and off Palisade.

One benefit felt combining electric motors and an engine together; enhanced torque providing plenty of passing and/or merging oomph compared with a similar-sized and litered internal combustion engine. Despite its three-row architecture, Palisade merged effortlessly into highway traffic from onramps.

Shoppers enjoy a wide selection of trims and build-a-bear opportunities within the mid-size Palisade hybrid subset including SEL, SEL Premium, Limited and Calligraphy. This compares with six trims offered in the internal combustion version. All arrive well stocked with oodles of standard equipment and scant few options; the higher one travels up the trim ladder, the greater the standard content. All four trims arrive with the choice of front-wheel drive or on-demand E-Motion HTRAC all-wheel drive (for an additional $2,000). Pricing starts at $44,160 for a front drive SEL hybrid.

Another decision potential buyers need to ponder; seven or eight person seating. Limited and Calligraphy trims arrive with seven-rider configurations standard (with a pair of standard second-row Captain's Chairs sporting fold-down inboard armrests). The SEL and SEL Premium trims offer a bench (three-person occupancy) option in row two.

All trims welcome a power-operated rear liftback door with the rear wiper hidden from few as it stows up top under the edgy roof spoiler, swiping down when dewatering the window. This marks a change from Gen One when swiping occurred from the bottom up.

The second generation's thicker glass application on the windshield, front door and tailgate reduces wind noise within the cabin. Drivers enjoy good road perception with the slightly higher seating position common and welcome within crossovers. Plus Calligraphy's two front backrests include a massaging function.

During the past 25 years since the introduction of Toyota's Prius, the best-known hybrid electric vehicle, pricing for the HEV premium has shrunk considerably when compared to a similar-sized internal combustion offering. In the case of Palisade, that difference now sits at approximately $2,200, thousands of dollars less then just a decade ago.

Our top-trim all-wheel drive cast-iron brown Calligraphy HEV tester with a camel-like light brown interior included a starting price of $56,780. The only option was dealer-installed carpet mats ($245) which brought the bottom line up to $60,525 including a $1,600 destination charge, representing the most opulent 2026 Palisade available.

For those looking for evermore ambiance, the upcoming 2027 Palisade Calligraphy offers a limited-edition 'Black Ink Edition' in both front and all-wheel drive featuring a unique black interior and exterior motif.

Features unique to 2026 Calligraphy trims include 21-inch wheels (the largest available), black and silver exterior accents with silver paint on the lower front grille, rain-sensing front wipers, premium napa interior seating materials, windshield projected heads-up gauge-info display, front bucket seat leg extenders, power folding third-row seating and a luxury-like reclining backrest feature found within the first two rows of seating. The Calligraphy trim brings forth an ambiance found in pricier luxury branded nameplates from Europe, Asia and here in the States for considerably less mooo-la.

Upon entering the long, narrow wide black screen takes center stage combining together two 12.3-inch projections; a right-side multi-function touch screen (gently skewed towards the driver) and left-side digital panel. This setup adorns many other Hyundai products and is known to occupy Hyundai's upscale Genesis Brand offerings. It sits below a flat-top style dash with inside A pillars surrounded by suede-like material.

It's a clean design that smartly employs a pair of dials and a row of push buttons below working in tandem with the screen (volume and station select brushed aluminum twist knobs) and completely separate station below to quickly and efficiently summon HVAC commands. Two twist dials (acting as dual zone settings with digital temperatures visible inside) flank two rows of white-on-black iconed push plates selecting direction, fan speed, front and rear defrosters and heated/vented front seats. This design makes the experience easier for the driver eliminating pinching-and-swiping through the multi-function screen to simply increase fan speed.

A pair of 100W capable Type C USB ports arrive within the lower center console. A single flat, wireless Qi-supported charger locates next to a pair of inline beverage holders between the front bucket seats. A sizeable armrest doubles as one of many available storage areas and employs a split side-by-side vertical top flipping open with a squeeze of a release lever up front. More storage is found floor bound under this center console and in front.

All-wheel drive editions include a series of terrain modes selectable via a lower center dash push plate including mud, and snow settings. This system works in tandem with a nearby plate selecting three conventional drive modes (Eco, Sport, My Drive) interacting with the digital instrument panel and gently modifying its dual orb, center information layout.

Calligraphy trims also employ blind spot video feeds into the instrument panel via tiny side-mounted cameras when summoning the turn signals left or right. It's a high-tech safety perk that's simple to use and easy to like. Once the turn or lane change is complete, the IP orbs return to their regular digital layout. Push buttons activating the power rear liftback, electronic parking brake and fuel door release position on the dashboard left of the steering column.

Calligraphy's third row nicely includes power seats that motor forward and back from side-mounted toggle switches allowing tall folks like me to enjoy more personalized leg room. The backrest powers back in the same fashion. Headroom quickly absorbed my six-foot, two-inch frame. This way back row accommodates two adults in optimal comfort and three pre-teens or tweens if called upon. All enjoy circular ceiling air vents.

Maneuvering into the back stretch involves ordering the second-row Captain's Chair forward via power, multi-sized toggle levers on the outboard seat cushion and/or a topside backrest push button. A wide aisle and ceiling handle straps assist those heading to the back.

Calligraphy trims also offer power buttons within the cargo area's driver's side wall commanding row two and three backrests to fold flat when a large, flat interior cargo bed comes in handy.

Calligraphy's rearview mirror includes a dual-function presentation including the conventional reflection view. However, to bypass heads and shoulders occupying the back rows, a camera set up behind row three projects live action activities digitally and colorfully through the rearview mirror for an unobstructed view of traffic activity behind Palisade once an underframe tab gets tweaked into place. It's a handy feature but the video feed and its short distance from the driver may create a tension headache if viewed for too long.

Outside, thick strap-like body-colored exit/entry handles adorn all four side doors (while interior handles include a circular pattern with a pull-style half-moon plate inside) with side-view mirror housing also body colored. Wheel wells absorb a circular style. While A, B and C pillars sport black hues, the thick D pillar ops for a brushed aluminum color. A single exhaust pipe extends out below the rear bumper on the passenger side. Both Calligraphy and Limited hybrid models include dual pane power sunroofs.

In 2025, Palisade sales in the U.S. reached 123,929, a 13 percent increase compared to the previous 12-month cycle and a new record high. Total sales from the Hyundai lineup reached 901,686, an eight-percent improvement from 2024.

This second-generation effort builds upon an already solid Generation One debut. With competitive pricing, a larger footprint, a vast array of safety features, a solid engine warranty and now a compelling HEV variant; it's a great place to start or continue shopping if in the market for a versatile three-row stallion.
