The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet is one of the few remaining high-performance luxury convertibles on the market. It combines grand touring comfort with genuine AMG performance, replacing the old C-Class and E-Class convertibles with a single, more refined model. Mercedes introduced the all-new CLE-Class in 2023 as a replacement for both the C-Class Coupe and the E-Class Coupe/Cabriolet. Rather than chasing outright track capability, the CLE 53 focuses on delivering effortless speed, everyday luxury, and open-air driving enjoyment.
For 2026, the Mercedes-Benz AMG CLE 53 is offered in two body styles, either a coupe or convertible, both sharing the same AMG powertrain and chassis. Focusing on the cabriolet, there are three different grades, the CLE 300, CLE 450, or the AMG CLE 53. The CLE 300 comes with a 2.0L inline-4 turbo engine with mild hybrid drive that delivers 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. The CLE 450 steps up to a 3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with mild hybrid drive to generate 375 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The AMG CLE 53 comes with an AMG enhanced 3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with hybrid assist that pushes out 443 horsepower with 413 lb.-ft. of torque. All models deliver engaging performances with prices that start at $69,400 for the CLE 300, $78,900 for the 450 and $85,700 for the AMG 53.
Competition includes models like the BMW M4/M440i, Lexus LC, and Audi S5. Although worth noting, the Lexus LC and Audi S5 are both being phased out limiting the competition in this niche segment. I spent a week in the top trim, AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet that checked in just under $100k and here’s what stood out…

Exterior:
Finished in a premium Graphite Grey matte paint with a red top, my test model was turning heads left and right. The matte finish really highlighted the details of the exterior but came with a $3,250 premium. Unlike many AMG models that emphasize oversized grilles and exaggerated bodywork, the CLE 53 maintains classic Mercedes proportions while adding more purposeful performance styling. It does a nice job of balancing elegance and aggression. Up front is a signature Panamericana grille, featuring vertical chrome slats surrounding a large Mercedes-Benz star. The grille is wider and more upright than on the standard CLE models, giving the car a more assertive face. Slim LED headlights wrap into the fenders and feature Mercedes' distinctive daytime running light signature. Overall, it’s hard to find a bad angle on the CLE 53, making it one of the more photogenic vehicles I’ve driven.
Soft Top:
Rather than appearing like an afterthought, the acoustic soft top complements the body's flowing design. It is available in several colors—including black and red—and folds beneath a hard tonneau cover in about 20 seconds at speeds up to approximately 37 mph. My test model had a red roof which you’ll either love or hate, either way it adds character and did pair well with the matte paint. With the roof raised, the car retains an elegant coupe-like silhouette. With the roof lowered, it transforms into a true luxury grand tourer. The soft top sits low when folded, preserving rear visibility and the car's elegant proportions. Mercedes also minimizes wind buffeting through careful windshield design and available AIRCAP wind management.
Powertrain:
While there are three options to choose from, I’ll focus on the top tier that came in the AMG CLE 53. It has a 48-volt mild hybrid assist system that boosts the combined horsepower to 443 paired with 413 lb.-ft. of torque. It pairs with an AMG speedshift 9-speed automatic and fully variable AWD. Mercedes gives its an electric auxiliary compressor which nearly eliminates turbo lag, while the inline-six provides a refined, muscular soundtrack. It's more sophisticated than explosive, making the CLE 53 equally comfortable cruising downtown or attacking open roads. Power is plentiful and will propel it from 0-60 MPH in about 3.6 seconds. It is very smooth and refined off the line and on the highway. It’s a breeze in and out of traffic, merging on the highway, and simply soars on the open roads. There are several drive modes you can select from that include slippery, comfort, sport, sport +, and individual. In Comfort mode it delivers nearly imperceptible shifts, while Sport+ and Manual modes produce quicker, more assertive gear changes.
The CLE 53 uses a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ that provides good traction in all weather, rear-biased handling feel, rapid torque redistribution, and improved corner exit acceleration. The system constantly varies power delivery between the front and rear axles, giving the car a more engaging character than many traditional all-wheel-drive luxury coupes and convertibles. Compared to AMG’s previous V8, this new powertrain offers smoother power delivery, better balance, improved fuel efficiency and virtually no turbo lag. All around it is a buttery smooth powertrain that is fun to drive.
Handling
Along with its impressive power is engineering that makes the CLE 53 engaging, agile, and comfortable to drive. The CLE 53's greatest strength is its balance. It offers enough athleticism to satisfy enthusiastic drivers while maintaining the ride quality expected from a premium Mercedes-Benz. The standard chassis includes AMG ride control adaptive suspension, rear-axle steering, speed-sensitive AMG steering, and an AMG high-performance braking system. Together, these systems make the CLE 53 feel smaller and lighter than its size suggests. The electrically assisted steering is one of the highlights of the driving experience. At low speeds, the steering is light and easy to maneuver, making parking surprisingly effortless. As speeds increase, steering weight builds naturally, providing greater confidence on winding roads and highways.
One of the CLE 53's most valuable performance technologies is standard rear-axle steering. At lower speeds, the rear wheels turn opposite the fronts, effectively shortening the wheelbase and making the Cabriolet feel much more maneuverable in parking lots and tight city streets. At higher speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels to improve stability during quick lane changes and sweeping highway curves. This creates a smaller turning circle, improved cornering, and overall greater agility.
The AMG Ride Control suspension uses adaptive dampers that continuously adjust to road conditions and selected drive modes making this ride one of the smoothest out there. The suspension absorbs broken pavement, expansion joints, and rough roads exceptionally well while maintaining impressive body control. Even with optional 20-inch wheels, the ride remains compliant enough for everyday commuting and long-distance touring. Road and wind noise are also impressively well controlled for a soft-top convertible thanks to the acoustic fabric roof and aerodynamic design. Overall, it is an outstanding grand touring convertible that is composed, agile, and refined.
Fuel Economy:
When it arrived with a full 17.2-gallon tank, it offered a driving range of around 375 miles. EPA estimates are 19 / 26 /22 MPG city / highway / combined. The 48-volt mild-hybrid system contributes by smoothing stop/start operation, providing brief electric power assistance during acceleration, and allowing the engine to coast more efficiently under certain driving conditions. It does require premium unleaded gasoline at 91 octane or higher so expect to pay more at the pump. Comparatively, it’s less efficient than most of its competitors.
Interior:
Hopping inside, Mercedes-Benz has created a cabin that feels both sporty and luxurious. The dashboard wraps around the driver, while the flowing center console and turbine-style air vents give the interior a modern, cockpit-inspired appearance. Mercedes uses top-level materials throughout including open-pore natural wood trim, brushed aluminum accents, carbon fiber, soft touch elements and metal speaker grilles that all create the premium vibe inside.
For my test car, AMG-specific elements distinguish the CLE 53 from the standard CLE Cabriolet, including:
- AMG performance steering wheel with integrated drive-mode controls
- AMG sport pedals in brushed stainless steel
- AMG-specific digital instrument graphics
- Illuminated AMG door sills
- Carbon fiber, aluminum, or natural wood interior trim
- Red contrast stitching and seat belts
With the top lowered, the cabin remains an inviting place to spend time thanks to carefully managed airflow and premium finishes that look just as good in sunlight as they do under the customizable ambient lighting at night.
Seating:
The AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet offers seating for four passengers and every seat is comfortable. Up front the seats are designed to balance both comfort and performance support. Standard are power-adjustability, heated front seats and four-way lumbar support. Higher trims will add multi-contour massage function, ventilated seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and AIRSCARF neck-level heating so you can cruise around with the top down on cool nights. I found the seats to be extremely comfortable with plenty of head, leg and shoulder room whether the top was up or down.
Like most luxury convertibles, the rear seats prioritize occasional use over spaciousness. However, they are not nearly as bad as you might think. My older teens were plenty comfortable riding in the back with individual rear seating positions separated by a center console. Legroom is limited for taller adults, particularly with the front seats adjusted fully rearward, but children or shorter passengers will find the rear seats suitable for shorter trips. The rear seats also feature a split-folding design, allowing longer items to extend into the cabin from the trunk.
Technology:
The technology inside the CLE 53 can be a bit intimidating as it is one of the more advanced technology suites in the segment. Drivers will face a 12.3” fully digital instrument display that includes all your standard information from classic gauges to a full-screen map display. It’s customizable to your preference with a simple minimalist look, supersport AMG layout, or something more classic. The AMG models add graphics for turbo boost, power and torque displays, engine temperature, transmission temperature, G-force meter, lap timer, and performance telemetry. The display is crisp, highly configurable, and easy to read in bright sunlight or at night. There is also an available AMG Head-up display that projects key information directly on the windshield that is easily visible, even in sunshine with the top down.
At the center of the dash is a 11.9” portrait-oriented touchscreen that utilizes Mercedes’ third-generation MBUX infotainment system. The system has been improved with over-the-air updates, faster processing, personalized profiles, customizable screens and more. It’s easier to navigate than older systems but will still take some time to familiarize yourself with as it is not as intuitive as a system from Lexus. It offers wireless smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, multiple USB-C ports, voice commands, and more.
Music lovers will appreciate the available Burmester 3D Surround Sound System. It comes with a premium multi-speaker setup, 3D surround sound processing, Dolby Atmos support with compatible content and services, sound personalization, and Front Bass technology, which uses the vehicle's structure to enhance low-frequency performance. When properly configured, the Burmester system delivers excellent clarity, a wide soundstage, and powerful bass, making it one of the standout audio systems in the class.
At night the interior is filled with ambient lighting to set the vibe. There are 64-color LED lighting options, illuminated air vents, multiple pre-set lighting themes, and dynamic effects tied to climate settings and vehicle functions. It’s a space that feels high-tech and modern but not overdone.
Cargo:
The AMG CLE 53’s prime focus is definitely not about hauling cargo as there is only 9.6 cubic feet of trunk space. With the power top folding into the trunk, that eats away at additional cargo room. It does, however, have a wide opening for easier loading and a hands-free power trunk lid. While it doesn’t sound like much, you can fit a couple carry on suitcases back there or a bag of golf clubs.
Safety / Driver Assist:
Mercedes keeps safety and forefront of its design of the CLE 53 with targeted reinforcement of the bodyshell structures to provide a high level of structural safety. Additionally, rigid A-pillars in combination with a system behind the rear seats serves as rollover protection. Among the extensive standard safety features are 11 airbags, including a new center airbag between front occupants and head airbags for rear seat passengers. Other standard features include:
- Active Brake Assist
- Blind Spot Assist
- Active Lane Keep Assist
- Parking Assistance with a 360-degree Surround View Camera
- Brake Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Pop-Up Rollover Protection
Additional features are available with the Driver Assistance Package for $1,950. It adds numerous active systems designed to reduce driver workload on highways and in heavy traffic. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is Mercedes' adaptive cruise control that can maintain a preset following distance, automatically brake and accelerate with traffic, resume driving after brief stops, and smoothly adapt speed during highway driving. Other features included are Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Active Speed Limit Assist, Traffic Sign/Intersection Assist, Evasive Steering Assist and Pre-SAFE Plus. There is a lot available on this car and overall, it offers more than most of its competitors.
Final Statement:
There aren’t many high-end luxury convertibles left on the market, and this one alone was built as a replacement for two separate models. The CLE 53 does a great job of blending elegant styling with impressive performance. Dressed in matte paint, it looked like a fancy Batmobile. This car is refined from the inside out. Under the hood, the 443-horsepower turbocharged inline-six delivers strong power while the interior surrounds you with comfort. It brings modern technology to the forefront, which is not too complicated to get used to and safety is still a priority. It’s worth a look if you want something that has a timeless design that will bring a smile to your face behind the wheel.
