Thanks to class-leading safety features, luxurious amenities, three rows of seating and agreeable car-like handling, the XC90 has enjoyed great success since Volvo launched their SUV five years ago.

Since it was first introduced, the competition in the premium SUV segment has improved, yet the XC90 remained virtually unchanged. Now, for 2007, Volvo has answered the bell with more safety features, more amenities, and more power.

Speaking of power, Volvo has dismissed the 2.5T model and replaced it with the 3.2 model. The XC90 3.2 ($36,135) features a 235-horsepower 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine.

Those wanting more power can choose either the XC90 V8 ($46,425) or XC90 V8 Sport ($49,300). Both are powered by a 311-horsepower 4.4-liter V8 engine, but the Sport adds specific wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and significant interior enhancements.

All three variants of the XC90 feature a 6-speed automatic transmission. The XC90 3.2 comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is optional on the 3.2 and standard on the V8 and V8 Sport.

Built off the respected P2 large-car platform that is also utilized by the flagship S80 luxury sedan, the XC90 is the largest vehicle in the Volvo lineup.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a safer vehicle than the XC90. Starting with an impressive safety cage design, Volvo adds interior safety systems like WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), and IC (Inflatable Curtain).

WHIPS offers protection during a rear-end collision, such as being struck from behind while sitting still or moving slowly.

SIPS include reinforced body members and side-impact airbags to help reduce the risk of serious injury in a side-impact.

Volvo's unique IC system consists of two inflatable "protective curtains" that deploy on each side of the vehicle to further protect front and rear passengers during a side-impact.

Of course, the XC90 also features Roll Stability Control (RSC), which helps prevent a rollover from occurring, and Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS), which helps provide increased protection should a rollover, occur.

For 2007, Volvo has added BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and adaptive bi-xenon headlamps. BLIS, a $595 option, utilizes cameras in the side mirrors to alert the driver when another vehicle has entered the XC90's blind spot.

While I didn't get an opportunity to test out BLIS, my XC90 3.2 tester came fitted with the optional ($800) adaptive bi-xenon headlamps. Much to my liking, the bi-xenon headlamps provide excellent lighting and they, with the adaptive feature, swivel up to 15 degrees in either direction to light your path on twisting roads.

The XC90's cabin is comfortable, versatile and features luxurious amenities. The audio system now features an input jack for MP3 players and the optional RTI (Road and Traffic Information) navigation system has been further developed to make it faster and easier to use.

After driving the XC90 3.2 I was impressed with how wonderful it performed both on the boulevard and on the highway. Acceleration is very good and the XC90 feels very confident regardless of speed.

My XC90 3.2 tester's ride was more on the soft side, but agreeable. Those wanting a firmer ride should look at the V8 Sport.

Overall, my XC90 3.2 tester delivered a refined ride that delighted my passengers and me. My XC90 3.2 tester's optional ($1,850) all-wheel drive system further improved its foul-weather traction.

I appreciated the extra versatility of the third-row seat. Standard equipment on V8 models, the third-row seat is optional on the 3.2 and requires the purchase of the Premium Package ($2,995) and the Versatility Package ($2,250).

By the time you add up all the options found on my XC90 3.2, you may as well step up to the V8 model. For buyers with a budget of $40,000 or less, don't be discouraged when you look at the price of this tester. Buyers who want to step into the XC90 can do so for around $37,000.
