2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer - Aggressive sedan.

By:

Inspired by more than 30 years of international rally competition, Mitsubishi's Lancer has evolved into an all-new, fun-to-drive compact sedan, featuring aggressive styling, exciting driving dynamics and advanced technologies.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer is very appealing as it incorporates the bold, dynamic lines of the Mitsubishi Concept-X along with an aggressive shark-nosed front end.

Beneath that sporty new sheet metal is a totally new global platform that also forms the foundation for the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV. As a result, the new Lancer has a longer wheelbase and wider track but has a slightly shorter overall length than the previous model.

This all translates to improved handling characteristics and more interior room. For 2008, Mitsubishi offers the Lancer in three trim levels: DE ($13,990), ES ($15,990), and GTS ($17,490).

The Lancer DE is nicely equipped and includes a 140-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3 playback, power windows and anti-theft immobilizer.

Stepping up to the ES model adds air conditioning, power locks, remote entry, security alarm system, alloy wheels, anti-lock brakes and more.

The GTS additions include larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, sport bucket front seats, rear spoiler, automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and an upgraded six-speaker audio system.

Standard safety features for all Lancer models include seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a segment exclusive drivers' knee airbag.

Powering all Lancer models is a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 152 horsepower. That's 32 more horsepower than Lancer's previous engine.

This new engine features Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) - a continuously variable valve timing system that works on both the intake and exhaust valves to improve power and fuel efficiency.

Mated to the engine is a standard five-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional.

When you step up to the sporty GTS model and opt for the CVT, you get an exclusive six-step Sportronic mode and magnesium steering wheel paddle shifters.

The Lancer GTS test vehicle came equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox. The clutch pedal feel was good and the gears were easy to find.

My disappointment came, though, with the engine's output. When driving by myself or with one other passenger, the 2.0-liter engine was adequate. But, when loaded down with four adults, the 2.0-liter engine felt underpowered.

Maybe my expectations were too high, especially when you see how sporty the GTS looks. Unfortunately, it has the same amount of power as the base line Lancer DE.

The sport-tuned suspension featured on my GTS tester and the supportive sport bucket seats give Lancer a slightly more agile tone than its DE and ES trim levels.

The overall ride in the Lancer GTS tester felt very refined and tuned more towards comfort. For those seeking more power and grip, the gap between the Lancer GTS and Lancer Evolution is huge.

I'd like to see a bit more performance upgrades for the GTS model. Then it would have more bite to go with its loud bark.
