2008 Subaru Impreza WRX Review

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX - Need for speed.

By:

Those that know rally cars certainly are familiar with the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. For 2008, the WRX STI represents the third-generation of the rally-bred supercar that Subaru first launched in the U.S. in 2004.

This all-new model is amazingly improved and a blast to drive. The 2008 STI hits the bull's-eye for those who have the need for speed while navigating twisty roads.

The 2008 STI improvements include an all-new roomier body structure, more powerful engine, upgrades to the Driver Control Center Differential (DCCD), and refined interior.

The 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI's new wide-fender 5-door body was inspired by the Subaru WRC Concept car. With its bulged fenders and rear quarter panels, rear gate-mounted spoiler and aerodynamic ground effects, the STI looks equipped to attack the pavement.

Oh yeah, STI's hood scoop, brake-cooling air intakes and engine heat outlets are all functional. Obviously, the STI is much, much more than a hopped up version of the WRX.

Exclusive features found in the STI version include the engine, transmission, DCCD All-Wheel Drive system, suspension, brakes, and interior trim.

Under STI's aluminum hood is an optimized 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Boxer engine. It pounds out 305 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and the peak torque (290 pound-feet) is the same as before, but it comes in at 4,000 rpm, which is 400 rpm earlier.

The increased output is mainly due to the addition of Dual Active Valve Control System (Dual AVCS) variable valve timing and the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) system.

Previously, only the intake cam timing was adjusted. Now, with Dual AVCS, both the intake and exhaust cams are adjusted to provide more power, yet reduce emissions and enhance fuel economy. The STI is rated at 17/23 mpg for city/highway.

Mated to STI's potent engine is an exclusive close-ratio, short throw six-speed manual gearbox. As expected, the clutch is somewhat stiff, but not objectionable. I just wouldn't want to be stuck driving this car in rush-hour traffic everyday.

Interestingly, the STI's driver-selectable SI-Drive system enables three distinctively different modes (Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp) of performance characteristics.

"Intelligent" mode provides smoother throttle response for commuting in traffic and lower peak torque for driving on slippery pavement.

"Sport" mode delivers quicker throttle response and "Sport Sharp" provides lightning-quick throttle response. I tried all three and was surprised with how different they were from each other. The car felt much more docile and easy to deal with in traffic in "Intelligent" mode while "Sport Sharp" provided the most fun.

Another driver selectable feature is Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) All-Wheel Drive system. In "Auto" mode, the system automatically divides the torque between the front and rear wheels. This system allows drivers to manually adjust the front-to-rear torque distribution.

The WRX STI driver can also custom-tailor the level of dynamic intervention offered by the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system. Drivers can turn VDC and traction control off for competitive purposes.

STI's new stiffer suspension helps keep the car planted in corners, yet without being too objectionable for cruising around town. The large and powerful Brembo brakes provide plenty of stopping power and are great for competitive events.

The race-inspired bucket front seats were very supportive and fit me like a glove. My STI tester also included the BBS package that replaces the stock 18-inch wheels with 18-inch BBS wheels and fog lamps.

A navigation system is also available. The STI is a serious performance car to be enjoyed by those that appreciate going fast on any kind of road. Just watch out for those speeding tickets and high insurance premiums.
