2008 Suzuki SX4 Review

2008 Suzuki SX4 - Suzuki surprise.

By:

Last year, Suzuki launched their SX4 Crossover, a nifty, entry-level compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. For 2008, Suzuki delivers a sedan version called SX4 Sport.

Yes, it's a sedan. So, why did Suzuki choose the "Sport" designation? That would be due to the sedan's standard 17-inch alloy wheels, aero body kit and lowered and stiffened suspension system featuring KYB performance shocks.

Suzuki has had a tough time cracking into the entry-level sedan segment in the U.S., and they hope their well-appointed, nicely styled, all-new SX4 Sport will earn some market share by appealing to younger buyers.

The 2008 SX4 Sport, offered in three trim levels (Base, Convenience and Touring), is one of the best-equipped compact cars available. The SX4 Sport in base trim ($14,770) features a long list of standard equipment including full power accessories, air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio, 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock and six airbags.

The SX4 Sport with Convenience Package ($15,270) adds automatic climate control, heated outside mirrors, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

The SX4 Sport with Touring Package ($16,270) adds an upgraded 380-watt audio system with 6-disc CD changer, fog lamps, rear spoiler, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with traction control and SmartPass keyless entry and start system.

Built in Japan, the SX4 Sport features a 143-horsepower 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine matched to a five-speed manual transmission or an available ($1,100) four-speed automatic.

The SX4 Sport powers the front wheels and one might be surprised to find that the automatic actually delivers better fuel economy than the manual. Another surprise is that at just 23/31 mpg for city/highway, the SX4 Sport (with automatic) is not anywhere near the top of the list when it comes to fuel economy kings in this segment.

The SX4 Sport tester came equipped with the Touring Package and automatic transmission. Overall, the 2.0-liter engine in my tester was adequate, but initial acceleration was sluggish. With most of the four-cylinder's power coming in at higher rpms, I'm sure the manual gearbox would allow the driver to make better use of the engine's power.

In keeping with the sporty theme of the SX4 Sport, I liked the instrument panel's red backlighting. The ride is very agreeable and more refined than I expected. The SX4 Sport is a small car that I'd be comfortable in on long trips. I was pleased with the amount of room afforded by SX4 Sport's cabin.

Most folks will probably like the SX4 Sport's higher driving position. It offers a better overall view of the road. But being a taller driver, I would have preferred a slightly lower position. Thankfully, though, the SX4 Sport's domed roof provided plenty of headroom in front and back.

Trunk space is good, too. But I was disappointed to find that the SX4 Sport's rear seats can't be folded down to provide space for longer items.

Overall, the SX4 Sport's key attributes are its long list of standard amenities and affordable price tag. Also, I should mention that like all Suzuki's, the SX4 Sport includes a 100,000-mile/seven-year, zero-deductible powertrain limited warranty.
