2010 Jaguar XK Review

2010 Jaguar XK - Packs more power.

By:

Jaguar's XK is the sexiest machine on the road. However, one of its shortcomings has been its timid 300-horsepower 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine.

Well, I can tell you it's now time to strike that criticism. For 2010, under new Indian ownership, the Jaguar XK leaps ahead of other sports touring models with a much more catlike direct-injected 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine that makes a pleasing 385 horsepower.

If that's not enough power, step up to the race-inspired XKR line. The XKR models now feature a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that pounds out an impressive 510 horsepower.

Don't worry: The new XK features much more than an engine upgrade. The current XK takes flight thanks to an aluminum structure that is aerospace inspired.

The body panels are cleverly wrapped to form a truly sexy car that is unmistakably Jaguar. This XK, regardless of which color you select, will certainly get you noticed. It's a real head turner. The look my XK tester received from other motorists undoubtedly confirmed that Jaguar had clearly hit the mark for exterior styling.

I felt extremely excited to be piloting this powerfully sexy and agile feline. As one would expect, the XK is as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. The level of craftsmanship has noticeably improved.

I love XK's perforated leather seats that wrap around you like a well-fitted glove. They offer a multitude of adjustments and are heated and cooled.

There isn't quite as much wood inside the new XK and that's OK with me. It's been replaced with more leather surfaces. I like that, including the feel and look of the standard, heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel and the suede found on the headliner, pillar trim and sun visors. This all greatly enhances the luxurious look and pleasing aroma.

You also can say goodbye to the J-gate shifter. If you're into gadgets, you'll like the new rotary shift knob that gently rises into the palm of your hand after depressing the start button.

You may also like the new touch screen interface for controlling various systems like climate control, audio system, navigation and phone. But this car does need a voice-command system besides the standard Bluetooth for phone use.

On the plus side is the new power plant. The 5.0-liter naturally aspirated engine in my tester made delightfully throaty roars from the magnificently styled exhaust outlets with every jab on the pedal.

But for ultimate cruising pleasure, you'll enjoy the high-end quality of the standard Bowers and Wilkins 525-watt signature sound system.

One could complain about the relatively large blind spot and the tiny backseat that basically only accommodates a couple of travel bags, but that's a small price to pay for all the goodies the XK provides.

On the road, thanks to the added engine power and the acclaimed JaguarDrive selector adaptive dynamics with active differential, the XK delivers a world-class ride regardless of how forceful you get with the pedal.

This car is delightfully smooth while cruising. I noticed that my XK tester was as smooth at triple-digit speeds as most cars are at about 50 to 60 mph.

Of course, the XK's powerful brakes are remarkable, too, and so is its impressive agility while carving up twisty country roads.

I can't think of a more pleasing all around sports touring car than the 2010 Jaguar XK. You can select either a coupe or convertible or you could up the ante for the 510-horsepower XKR coupe or convertible.
