2023 Genesis GV70 Review

2023 Genesis GV70 - The new kid on the luxury block continues to impress.

By:

The GV70 is a compact 5-passenger, luxury crossover that first debuted for 2021 as a gasoline only model. The all-electric version was revealed a year later with the same general design, but a different power source. It also happens to be the first U.S.-assembled model for Genesis. The electrified model is available with one of two packages, Advanced or Prestige. Both come standard with all-wheel drive, two electric motors and a 77.4 kWh battery that delivers 429 horsepower. Prices start at $67,575 for the Advanced or $74,375 for the Prestige. Comparatively, the non-electric GV70 starts at $45,475. Competition includes models such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq, Lexus RZ, Mercedes-Benz EQB, Tesla Model Y, and Volvo XC60 Recharge. This was an all-new model for 2022 that carries over for 2023. I spent a week in a top end Prestige model that checked in at $74,350 and here's what stood out:

Exterior Style (+)
The Electrified version looks just as good as the non-electric GV70. Up front, the extra-large crest grille has been modified into an aerodynamic crest with an inverted G-Matrix pattern that includes a hidden EV charging point - the best execution of a charging port in my opinion. Two-Line headlamps put the finishing touch on it with Genesis' signature Two Lines architecture. Proportions are well-balanced with a long wheel-base and wide stance. The side profile is smooth with soft edges and a sporty arch to the back c-pillar. The rear side windows have slim wedges that impact visibility but look sporty. Around back, the two-line LED lights carry on across a minimalist styled rear hatch, tailpipe-free skid plate, license plate in the bumper, and Genesis spelled out across the hatch. At first glance, you'll have to look hard to notice the altered grille and rear bumper to distinguish it from the rest of the gas-powered GV70s.

Paint (+)
My test vehicle came in Saville Silver that had such a high-quality finish that looks and feels rich. Genesis uses a proprietary paint that enhances the already clean design of its vehicles. The GV70 Electrified is available in Vik Black, Savile Silver, Makalu Gray and Makalu Gray Matte.

Wheels (+)
Both models come with 20" directional alloy wheels that are highly detailed and stylized. They counter the smooth design of the car with edgy razor-like styling. They come wrapped in 265/45R20 Michelin Primacy Tour AS tires that handle the pavement nicely.

Power & Performance (+)
All GV70 Electrified models come with dual electric motors to produce up to 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, a standard Boost Mode allows the driver to experience a maximum of 483 horsepower for 10 second increments at the touch of the boost button. That's enough to propel it from 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds.  The instant torque delivers immediate power with a smooth jolt. The power is spread out for controlled driving dynamics that make this a great cruiser.  It is effortless and refined around town and on the highway. It's easy to merge in traffic with responsive steering and feels well-grounded while easy to maneuver. The standard adaptive suspension is tuned well to scan road surfaces, minimize body roll, and smoothly slide over all kinds of pavement.

The Electrified GV70 also comes with four different driving modes that include Eco, Comfort, Sport, Snow and a custom MY mode. Each of these modes will vary the performance based on road conditions.  Suspension, AWD functioning, steering, handling, and torque distribution are all adjusted. Note that operating in Sport mode will be the most engaging but will also decrease the overall range.

The Electrified GV70 driving experience is further enhanced with Smart Regenerative Braking System 2.0, which regenerates energy through the braking system based on driving habits, real-time navigation, and road conditions. In driving mode, the Intelligent Pedal (single pedal driving mode) allows the driver to accelerate, decelerate, and slowly to a stop using just the accelerator pedal. For added driving comfort, the Electrified GV70 also comes equipped with Active Noise Control-Road that significantly reduces the level of noise by measuring and analyzing road noises and simultaneously creating soundwaves at opposite frequencies.

Range / Charging (+/-)
With a range of up to 236 miles, the GV70 is lower, but still comparable to other EVs in this segment. It gets an EPA-estimated 98 MPG-equivalent in the city, 83 on the highway and 91 MPGe combined. It can charge from 10-80% in around 18 minutes when connected to a 350kW/800V DC Ultra-Fast charger. However, more commonly it can get fully charged in a 240-volt or Level 2 public charger in around 7 hours.  DC fast charging will take a little over an hour to go from 10-80%. During my time I did feel like the range depleted much quicker than competitors like the Volvo or Cadillac Lyriq, creating some minor range anxiety in search of the nearest DC Fast Charger. Pop the hood and you won't find a full frunk as seen in some others, but you will have a small storage area large enough to hold charging cables.

In collaboration with Electrify America, Electrified GV70 owners will receive three years of 30-minute complimentary charging sessions from the date of vehicle purchase. Owners will have access to hyper-fast charging on Electrify America's coast-to-coast charging network and can seamlessly locate and access charging stations while on the road via the Genesis Connected Services and Electrify America mobile apps.

Interior Vibe (+)
Hopping inside, you'll find a clean, elegant interior. Materials are high-quality, soft touch, and put together well. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3" 3D digital gauge cluster and sitting atop the dash is a 14.5" HD infotainment touchscreen.  Separating the dash is a horizontal trim that embeds the climate vents and stretches to the doors creating a wide look.  A pod of controls sits lower for navigation, climate, and setup screens. Two small cup holders, a dial gear-selector and a dial infotainment control are all part of the center console. The quality of assembly is impressive, even the steering wheel exudes luxury with soft-touch leather, brushed silver accents and good gripping points.

The seats are comfortable with ample head, leg, and shoulder room up front. The power seats are easily adjustable, including extension in the front so that you can find a comfortable seating position for drivers of all sizes. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, a power-telescoping steering wheel and power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats. Options include a quilted Nappa leather upholstery, a synthetic leather-wrapped upper instrument panel, a suede headliner, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and rear side-window sunshades.  Rear seat space is reasonable but may feel tight for larger adults.  Look up and you're treated to a full panoramic glass roof with an opening sunroof. It provides both fresh air and daylight for a well-lit cabin.

Technology (+/-)
Behind the steering wheel it comes standard with an 8" digital cluster, although optional is a 12.3" 3D digital cluster available in the Prestige Package which runs $6,800.  Optional is a head-up display that project key information onto the windshield clearly. Standard in all models is a 14.5" infotainment touchscreen that is set high on the dash and a bit out of reach.  It does integrate with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, however there is no wireless mobile phone integration, and a cord is required. This negates the use of the standard wireless phone charger. In addition to the touch screen controls for the infotainment system, it can be controlled via a rotary dial in the center console. It is stacked within inches of the rotary gear selector, and both are nearly the same size. While I assume you'd get used to this over time, I found myself often grabbing the wrong dial. Both dials work well and are well-constructed, but the placement could be better differentiated. Overall, the system is intuitive but lacks some functionality found in competitors.

Standard is an eight-speaker stereo system, but also part of the Prestige Package is a 15-speaker Lexicon premium sound system. Other tech features include ambient lighting, tri-zone climate controls, Genesis digital key, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Navigation is also standard with cloud-based platform optimized routing, voice recognition and over-the-air updates.

Smart Park (+)
A bonus feature is the remote smart park assist in which you can start and move the GV70 without sitting inside. It operates just like Hyundai's system and is a neat trick that is quite easy to use. While standing near the vehicle, you can start it up via the remote and once activated, you can control the car at the touch of a button by moving it forward or back as if it was a remote-controlled car. The feature is very user friendly and safe. Releasing the button immediately stops the GV70 or it will stop itself if it detects an object or person.

Cargo Capacity (+)

The Electrified GV70 has 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats and 56.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Those figures are good for a compact luxury crossover and nearly identical to the standard gas only GV70.  It comes standard with a hands-free power liftgate and below floor storage. The hatch opening is wide and easy to access with levers on either side to fold the back seats down flat.

Safety (+)
The GV70 Electrified comes standard with a comprehensive advanced driver assistance system that includes:

* Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
* Lane Keeping Assist
* Lane Following Assist
* Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance-Assist
* Blind-Spot View Monitor
* Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance-Assist
* Highway Driving Assist
* Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go
* Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
* Driver Attention Warning
* High Beam Assist
* Surround View Monitor
* Parking Distance Warning
* Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist - Reverse
* Remote Smart Parking Assist
* Safe Exit Assist
* Advanced Rear Occupant Alert
* Tire Mobility Kit

Final Statement

As the newest luxury brand on the market, Genesis continues to build impressive vehicles that are contemporary with a sleek design, serene interior, and refined drive quality. Details like the dual horizontal lighting signatures, hidden charging port, intricate 20" wheels, and paint quality separate this from competing models. It's extremely comfortable inside and its road manners amplify the calm vibe. Bonus features like the Boost button and Smart Park are the icing on the cake for this all-new electric GV70.
