2004 Cadillac SRX Review

2004 Cadillac SRX - Performance, bold design.

By:

The all-new Cadillac SRX delivers a finely-tuned level of performance and flexibility to the medium luxury utility segment. It's a vehicle that you'll enjoy driving no matter what road conditions you encounter.

With ride and handling characteristics that rival a sports sedan, and bold styling cues, SRX is destined to make its mark in this class.

SRX is the latest model to express Cadillac's bold new design form. As the first of Cadillac's S-series of models, SRX foreshadows and shares automotive DNA with future vehicles like the all-new 2005 STS sedan.

Available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) applications and based on GM's acclaimed new Sigma architecture, SRX is designed to deliver superior driving dynamics.

Many attributes set SRX apart, but at the top of that list is performance. While SRX and its CTS sibling share a common platform, it has been modified for SRX, featuring the longest wheelbase in its class. This translates to a roomier cabin and excellent ride quality.

SRX is offered with two engine choices; a 3.6-liter V6 or a 4.6-liter Northstar V8. Both engines are quite sophisticated, offering electronic throttle control and variable valve timing. Premium fuel is recommended, but not required for both the V6 and V8.

The V6 generates 260 horsepower, while the V8 is rated at 320 horsepower. Choosing the V8 obviously adds significant power under the foot, but at the same time it will quickly lighten the load in your wallet, too.

The price of admission for a V6-powered RWD SRX is about $39,000. Choose the V8 and you'll spend about $47,000.

A five-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (which offers manual shifting) is standard. The transmission is geared to provide good power in all gears and it delivers ultra-smooth shifts.

Chassis management and vehicle control systems on the SRX offer a high level of sophistication and performance. The standard StabiliTrak active suspension control system and available Magnetic Ride Control make SRX feel more like a sports sedan than a clumsy SUV. The electronically controlled magnetic-fluid based real-time damping is the world's fastest-reacting suspension control system.

Speed-sensitive variable effort steering, four-channel ABS with Panic Brake Assist and traction control and available AWD also are included.

Once inside the new SRX it becomes obvious that there was an intense focus in developing and providing usable and convenient passenger and storage space. SRX seats up to seven passengers with the optional third row seat engaged. However, third row legroom (24.2-inches) is minimal.

The second row seat, with the most legroom in its class at 41 inches, folds virtually flat, and the third row seat power-folds into the floor at the push of a button.

Vehicles not equipped with the optional third-row seat can have a cargo management system integrated into the rear floor. Additional storage areas include covered front door compartments, front door map pockets, front seatback pockets, front center console with two compartments, a bin behind the front console, glove box with shelf, covered cup holders in the front seat center console and second seat fold-down armrest with cupholders.

My co-tester and I were surprised to find that SRX's power window switches are rocker type. We thought they should be replaced with safer, pushdown, pull-up switches.

Nearly all of the vehicle's interior space can be illuminated with daylight with the largest sunroof system available in the segment. The optional "UltraView" sunroof provides the thrill of an open-air driving experience. It extends to provide 5.6 feet of open air over the first and second row seats and integrates a retractable power shade. The "UltraView Plus" includes a vented glass roof over the third row seat and a power sunshade.

The SRX is loaded with amenities, including OnStar service for one year. Options offered include a rear seat DVD entertainment system and an in-dash DVD navigation system.

Buyers looking for a luxury SUV with car-like attributes should definitely put SRX on their short list. SRX is such a pleasure to drive, and with CadillacÕs newer, bolder styling it really stands out in the crowd.
